Having Difficult Conversations
Building Confidence Through Courage and Compassion
Most of us don't avoid difficult conversations because we don't care—we avoid them because we don't know how to begin. Yet handled well, these conversations can strengthen relationships, build trust and create healthier workplace cultures.
Preparation is key. Be clear about the behaviour you want to discuss, the impact it has had and the outcome you're hoping to achieve. Approach the conversation with curiosity rather than judgement, listen actively, acknowledge emotions and focus on understanding before responding.
Simple conversation starters can make all the difference. Frameworks such as "When you... I feel... because... In future I would like..." or asking open questions like "Could you tell me more about what you mean?" help create dialogue rather than defensiveness. Separating intent from impact, encouraging empathy and challenging stereotypes respectfully can all lead to more constructive outcomes.
Successful conversations also depend on emotional intelligence. Choose the right environment, allow space for silence, preserve the relationship, remain consistent and agree clear actions before closing the discussion. Like any skill, confidence grows with practice.
Difficult conversations are rarely easy, but they are often where the greatest learning, growth and positive change begin.
